Galaxy S25 Ultra & S24 Ultra hit with triple whammy of update bugs

The rollout of Samsung’s July One UI update is not going to plan.

Just days after installing it, many Galaxy S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra owners are reporting major, software-related issues. These include significant battery drain and overheating, as well as slower charging speeds in some cases.

Samsung is yet to officially acknowledge the issues, let alone release a patch. But other users have suggested some potential fixes in the meantime.

“Severe standby battery drain”

The first, and seemingly most widespread, issue concerns battery drain while the phone is in standby mode – e.g. locked but not switched off.

According to one user in the Samsung Community forums, previously normal battery life patterns on their S25 Ultra shifted hugely after the update. The battery percentage supposedly dropped from 85% to just over 5% in under 12 hours, despite only 2 hours and 9 minutes of active usage.

A separate post in the same forums describes the S24 Ultra suffering from “massive battery drain”.

Comments on this post, as well as via Reddit threads, suggest that the issue is widespread.

Suggested fixes include clearing the cache partition, putting unused apps into deep sleep mode and running safe mode to see if the offending app/s can be isolated. Also, turning battery protection to maximum, ensuring wireless power sharing is off and disabling nearby device scanning and RAM Plus settings.

“My device is overheating”

As if the battery drain wasn’t enough, heat management appears to be a significant problem.

Another Samsung Community user had hoped that the July update would fix “minor” heating problems on their S25 Ultra. Instead, they appear to have made the situation worse, stating that “even when I’m not using the phone, it becomes very hot”.

A subsequent discovery suggests a stuck background WhatsApp backup could’ve been the cause, but it’s unlikely to be the culprit for everyone.

A moderator suggests disabling Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and other connectivity features, reducing screen brightness, closing or uninstalling suspected apps, reducing demanding gaming sessions and not using the phone while charging. But none of these should be necessary to avoid overheating on a high-end flagship phone.

“A lot of issues with Samsung’s fast charging”

To make matters worse, another Samsung Community member suggests that charging speeds are worsening over time on the S24 Ultra.

A full charge, which took around 70 minutes in our review testing, is now supposedly as high as three hours. The user believes it to be related to the One UI 8.5 update, though it’s unclear if the July patch has made the situation worse.

It’s ironic that’s almost exclusively designed to fix Android flaws has introduced plenty of its own. Let’s hope Samsung can fix the issues now, instead of waiting for the August update or later.
